Howard Stern Calls Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez 'Dummies'

Britney will be 'train wreck' on 'X Factor,' new 'America's Got Talent' judge adds at press conference.
By James Montgomery

<P>Howard Stern held court at New York's Friars Club on Thursday in a long-running press conference to promote his upcoming stint as a judge on "America's Got Talent." And in keeping with the spirit of the legendary roasts that take place at the venue, he didn't shy away from taking some shots at his singing-competition contemporaries.</P><P>Stern was asked by a reporter whether he would have signed up for the "Talent" gig if it meant serving on a panel with "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez and newly-announced <a href="/news/articles/1684813/britney-spears-x-factor-judge.jhtml">"X Factor" judge Britney Spears</a> &#8212; as opposed to the "Talent" tandem of Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne &#8212; and, well, let's just say he answered rather directly.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Howard Stern Calls Britney Spears And Jennifer Lopez 'Dummies'" id="vid:768341" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"No, I would not [have], because I think we have the best judging panel out there, out of all these shows. I think that the judges all offer constructive, precise criticism, and I really like it," Stern said. "To sit there with J.Lo and Britney Spears and try to prop those two up, I'd be like a ventriloquist with two dummies; I'm not going to sit there and do that."</P><P>Stern didn't stop there, either. When he was asked for his thoughts on "The X Factor" 's reported <a href="/news/articles/1684879/britney-spears-x-factor-deal-judge.jhtml"> $15 million deal with Spears</a>, the shock jock joked that he was in favor of it ... for slightly dubious reasons, of course.</P><P>"I think it's a wonderful decision; Britney still thinks the world is flat. We're going to tune in to see if she can sort of function through the thing. As far as any real criticism, I think ["X Factor" judges] Simon [Cowell] and L.A. Reid will be doing that," he said. "I think Britney's going to stand there and eat a lollipop and wear a sexy outfit; I don't anticipate great opinions from her. I think she's going to sit there like J.Lo. 'Oh, you're wonderful, you're terrific. You think I could get a perfume endorsement out of this? You think I can perform on the show?' I think that's what it's about, but I think it will be interesting. ... I'll tune in to see what kind of train wreck she is, absolutely."</p>

SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace drum up support for the space hotel of the future

Image

SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace are teaming up to cross-promote their private aerospace tech. The duo are kicking off a tour in Asia to drum up governmental and business support for the Falcon 9 rocket and BA's BA 330 floating habitat. The latter has 330 cubic meters of space and can support a crew of six for scientific experimentation, or ensuring no-one can ever out-do your bachelor party. More details about the tie up are expected just as soon as Elon Musk's company can get that DragonX to escape the atmosphere.

Connected Moms: Nielsen Says 54% Own Smartphones; 75% Use Facebook; 5M Visit Pinterest Monthly

whistler's mother bloggerNielsen has been running some research into different demographics and their impact in the digital world, and their latest -- quite possibly as a hat-tip to Mother's Day this weekend -- is a look at U.S. moms, a group that you might have assumed would be technical luddites, but actually are holding their own very well, thankyouverymuch. It turns out that mothers are above average smartphone users, big fans of Facebook and Pinterest, and that the concept of a "mommy blogger" is actually a reality. The results also show that they are some of the most engaged consumers online.

Kleiner Perkins And Sequoia Fund $6.5M Round For Cross-Device Ad Targeter Drawbridge

drawbridge logoWhen two of the biggest names in venture capital (arguably still the biggest) both invest in a startup, you know it's probably time to take notice. So yes, take notice: A cross-device ad targeting startup called Drawbridge has raised a $6.5 million Series A from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital. The company was founded in November 2010 by Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan, a scientist at AdMob and then, after the acquisition, at Google. Sivaramakrishnan says she started the company because she saw the proliferation of ad targeting technology on the desktop web, while there was "no significant technology innovation" on the mobile side. So she decided to tackle the problem herself, "outside of the big G."

Facebook testing 'highlight' feature, lets users pay $2 to promote their status updates

Finding ways to throw money at Mark Zuckerberg is notoriously difficult, but a new 'highlight' feature could be just the trick. Currently being tested with a small population of users, it allows an ordinary member to pay $2 to ensure that their latest status update crops up in more of their friends' news streams. Ordinarily, the degree to which a status update is streamed depends on the number of likes or comments it has, which ensures that users generally only see the juiciest gossip, but paying this little premium would cause Facebook's algorithms to distort that in your favor. In other words, it's money replacing popularity, or simply -- sigh -- life.

Nokia Reading opens its pages to select European nations, more to follow

Nokia's not shy when it comes to decorating the Lumia halls with proprietary and partnership apps. The latest addition? That Nokia Reading app we first saw announced at MWC. Owners of Lumia 900, 800, 710 and 610 phones in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK will be able to get their thumbs amidst those digital pages over the next few weeks, while unspecified "other" countries can look forward to it some time later in the year. Espoo is keen to point out that there'll be an emphasis on "own language" titles, but also a large collection of English language best sellers for which translations aren't available. It's just the written word for now, but audio books and news feeds will be introduced later. Let's just hope you finish reading The Color Purple by then.

Strikeforce presents a reminder of how Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier got to finals of the grand prix (VIDEO)

Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix will end next Saturday as Daniel Cormier faces Josh Barnett in the final. Since the eight-man tournament has been through many twists and turns, here's a handy-dandy reminder of the wins, losses, and those super-cool lettermen jackets.

Cormier's spot in the finals is particularly surprising considering he was a replacement for Alistair Overeem, who found his way to the UFC after making it to the semifinals of the grand prix. Will his undefeated streak continue, or will Barnett walk away the champ? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

'Game Of Thrones' Throws Out The Book

Latest episode features a massive departure from the source material.
By Josh Wigler

Alfie Allen in "Game of Thrones"
Photo: HBO

See that beautiful platinum-blond princess across the way? That's Daenerys Targaryen. Stay away from her. Everyone she loves dies or gets taken away — not ideal for those of you who value your lives.

Honestly, as much as I'm loving this season, I'm not happy with where "Game of Thrones" is taking Dany. I'm an avid fan of George R.R. Martin's source material but not a stickler or purist who believes his novels must be adapted to the letter. Still, the liberties taken with Dany in Qarth, this week in particular, feel needless and damaging to who the character is.

We'll get deeper into that later in our recap. Keep reading for more updates from Westeros, most of them blood-soaked and reeking of death — with one lovely exception.

Bye-Bye, Whiskers
Northerners, man. Those guys have a hard time hanging onto their heads, don't they? Ser Rodrick is the latest to die on the chopping block, at the hands of the traitorous (not to mention embarrassingly weak) Theon Greyjoy, now fancying himself Lord of Winterfell and Prince of the Iron Islands. As we say goodbye to the sweetest whiskers in Westeros, Rodrick's final words ring true: Theon really is truly lost now. But where Theon falls, his performer rises: Actor Alfie Allen continues to kill it as Theon this season. If you think you've seen him at his lowest after this week — well, keep watching.

Gone With the Reeds
With Winterfell sacked, Bran and his companions are left powerless ... well, not entirely powerless. The crafty Osha sleeps with Theon and manages to sneak Bran, Rickon, Hodor and the direwolves out of House Stark's royal seat as a result. It's cool to see this story moving so quickly, but still, where are Jojen and Meera Reed? The greenseer and his sister are huge parts of Bran's story at this point in the books, but with their continued absence and Osha's increasing prominence, I'm beginning to think they're out of the picture for good. Casualty of adaptation, I suppose, but a change I'm sorry to see.

Ra Ra Riot
The North isn't the only area of Westeros under fire. In King's Landing, the wicked Joffrey's awful behavior nearly costs him his life when he incites a bloody riot that turns the streets red. He barely escapes with his life — though he thankfully doesn't evade a physical shaming at Tyrion's hands once again — as does Sansa, who is nearly raped by a trio of rioters. Her life is saved by the Hound, who finally gets his long-awaited Terminator moment when he guts one of the would-be rapists and kills the other two in equally merciless fashion. One of the best characters in the books, Sandor Clegane hasn't had much to do on the show so far. Perhaps this is the beginning of bold new things for the most feared burn victim in the Seven Kingdoms.

Kissed by Fire
It wasn't all doom and gloom on "Thrones" this week. Finally, Jon Snow has met his match in Ygritte, a wilding warrior woman who is more than prepared to meet her maker should the worst come to pass. Of course, she also values her life greatly and isn't afraid to make some moves on Jon to keep herself safe. That's not great news for Jon; as a man of the Night's Watch, Lord Snow isn't allowed to take women into his bed. Then again, he's a teenager and, well, you know — hormones and all that. Perhaps what happens north of the Wall stays north of the Wall?

Where Are My Dragons?
All the way east in Qarth, Dany is unsuccessful in recruiting the city's leaders to her cause to sail to Westeros and claim the Iron Throne. Worse, when the khaleesi returns to her quarters after her failed attempt to secure a fleet, she finds many members of her khalasar — beloved handmaiden Irri included — dead, with her dragons missing to boot. None of this happens in the books. I'm guessing it's a dramatic new way to get Dany to the House of the Undying, where she'll experience her fair share of life-altering events. But it's an unnecessary departure that, A) kills even more of the characters in Dany's story despite their survival in the books, further complicating the butterfly effect the show will have to deal with as it gets deeper into Martin's mythology, and B) cheapens Dany's character by stealing her dragons right out from under her. Just as she says, Dany is a strong and fierce fighter fueled by fire and blood. She is the mother of dragons. There is no world in which Dany's dragons are taken from her without her losing her life in the process. I don't like what the show's decision to steal Dany's dragons away from her says about the character, but maybe that's just me. What say you, readers of "Ice and Fire": Are you as bothered by the new changes to Dany's story as I am, or are you not sweating it? Hit us up in the comments below and let us know!

LTE-equipped Samsung Galaxy S III coming to TELUS in Canada

Galaxy s III

Following the phone's unveiling in London last week, Canadian carrier TELUS is the first North American mobile network to reveal that it'll be carrying the LTE version of Samsung's new Galaxy S III. TELUS says the phone will be available "in time for the summer," which fits with the June timeframe that Samsung has marked for the Galaxy S III's U.S. launch.

TELUS says it isn't offering any details on pricing or specifications just yet, which leads us to believe that the device it'll offer may differ somewhat from what we saw in London last week. That's to be expected, however, and we've already heard plenty of reports suggesting a different chip may power the LTE version of the Galaxy S III.

Nevertheless, it's good news for Canadians on TELUS, though with no mention of any exclusivity deal, we wouldn't be surprised to see other Canadian carriers declaring their interest in the device in the days and weeks ahead. For more on the Galaxy S III, check out our exhaustive coverage of the London launch event last week, which includes detailed hands-on impressions.

We've got TELUS and Samsung's press release after the break.
